Summer Reading programs focus on dinosaurs, adventure, exploration for kids, teens, families


Spokane, WA | May 26, 2026Spokane County Library District (SCLD) announces Summer Reading programs for families, kids, early learners, tweens, and teens. The theme for summer is “Unearth a Story” with events and activities all about dinosaurs, adventure, exploration, and discovery.
                                                                                Kids & Families
Supa Buddies, report to the library! A mashup of mayhem awaits all buddies during Dog Man Supa' Adventures: Activities & Crafts. Kids can try fun activities and crafts to celebrate their favorite furry crime-fighting characters.
Dinosaur fans and curious explorers can see fossils and images, hear interesting facts, and try a dinosaur-themed activity during Dinosaur Discovery Fun. Children’s writer Kelly Milner Halls answers questions about dinosaurs that she researched while writing her book A Dinosaur for Washington.
Discover Prehistoric Creatures (That Aren’t Dinosaurs) while doing activities and learning amazing facts about creatures, such as saber-toothed cats, woolly mammoths, and colossal monsters of the deep.
Each I Survived book shares a harrowing tale of survival based on a true event. Kids and families can explore the science behind disasters, complete challenges, and see if they have what it takes to survive during I SURVIVED: The Invasion of the Library, 2026.
Family Storytime in the Park returns to Spokane Valley parks this summer. Families with kids ages 4 and older are invited to experience a free, interactive storytime and concert in a beautiful park setting at BeethoVan Pop-Up in the Park: Storytime with Spokane Symphony Ensemble.
No job’s too big, no pup’s too small to power up our brains at the library. The library needs help with a literacy mission at the PAW Patrol Party! Only brave adventurers can spread learning throughout library land by completing crafts and activities.
Meet Cedar the Highland Cow & Her Calf Clover, Mascot of the 75th Interstate Fair. Celebrate 75 years of the Spokane County Interstate Fair and meet this year’s furry mascot at Spokane Valley Library (22 N Herald Rd). Author Honey Louise Smith reads her picture book Cedar’s Amazing Journey, the story of Cedar’s first year of life. Cedar and Clover will also be available for photo opportunities and petting.
                                                                            Tweens & Teens
Tweens and teens can turn cookies into delicious art with Cookie Decorating! Baker Catee Ng shares basic techniques for cookie decorating that you can practice on three cookies that you take with you.
Using observation skills and critical thinking to complete escape room-style challenges, participants can solve logic puzzles, math problems, codes, and ciphers during Escape Room with a Twist.
Teens who like things that sparkle and shine are invited to bring a book, journal, or planner to transform with rhinestones into Bedazzled Books: Diamond Art Covers.
These workshops for ages 10–14 are where creativity and technology come together at The Lab at North Spokane Library (44 E Hawthorn Rd) and The STCU Studio at Spokane Valley Library: Coding Basics, 3D Stereoscopic Images & Viewer, Video Boot Camp, Audio FX: Make Some Noise, and Hebocon 2026: The Junky Robot Competition.
