September library programs offer opportunities for creativity, inspiration, helpful information

Spokane, WA | August 21, 2025 – Spokane County Library District (SCLD) announces September programs, workshops, and events for adults that provide a variety of opportunities for lifelong learning. Plus, kids, tweens, and families can stop by the library for after-school activities, to solve a mystery, and for engaging storytimes.

Adults: Nature & Survival Skills Workshops

The Lands Council leads the Tree Identification Walk: Appleway Trail, the last of the season, and shares the fundamentals of determining tree species. We’re wrapping up two survival classes in September. Be sure to sign up for Introduction to Wilderness Survival in the Inland Northwest and Introduction to Urban Survival, both led by Charlie Bouck, 20-year U.S. Air Force Survival Instructor.

SCLD Online Authors Series

September brings you three engaging author talks with Hannah Nicole Maehrer, New York Times bestselling author and TikTok superstar, Jefferson Fisher, New York Times bestselling author and social media sensation, and Gabe Henry, simplified spelling historian and author of Enough is Enuf. Sign up to watch live and submit your questions to the authors. You can also view recorded talks, available 24 hours after each live event.

Adults: Creative Classes

Explore your creativity during Cookie Decorating using a watercolor technique, Long-Stitch Bookbinding trying a traditional method, Outdoor Painting Meetup: Fall Foliage, and at the Podcast Publishing session in The STCU Studio.

Adults: Gardening Programs

During the Seed Saving class, explore techniques to identify, harvest, and store seeds for the next planting season and to share with SCLD’s seed libraries. Practice saving seeds from drought resistant flowers during Seed Saving in Spokane Valley Meadow. If you have pests in your garden or you want advice on your garden, the WSU Extension Master Gardeners Plant Clinic at Cheney Library can help. Do you have a bountiful harvest of fruit and vegetables? Bring your extras to a Produce Swap and take home something different from another garden.

Adults: Health, Wellness & Support Sessions

The next workshop series for A Matter of Balance: Preventing Falls starts in September at North Spokane Library. Learn strategies to reduce risk factors for falling.

Our Memory Café for those experiencing memory loss and their caregivers continues at North Spokane and Spokane Valley Libraries. Other informative library programs that offer support include Dementia programs, Medicare sessions, Homebuyer Education Seminar, and WorkSource Drop-In Help.

Small Businesses & Professional Development Topics

If you’re thinking of getting a business loan and wonder what the banker is looking for, this workshop from SCORE Spokane is for you: Business Loans: Expert Tips from a Business Banker.

If you’re interested in business, career, and personal growth topics, be sure to sign up and view the online talk with author Elaine Lin Hering. Please note that this online talk is only viewable live and no recording will be available for later viewing.
Kids, Tweens & Families

Harness your detecting and critical thinking skills to look for clues, solve codes, and help crack The Case of the Missing Book (ages 8–12). Find a LEGO Free Play drop-in session for kids ages 5 and older and their families at a library near you to explore your building and engineering skills. These after-school programs offer new activities each week with a focus on science, technology, engineering, art, or math (STEAM): Terrific Tuesdays at North Spokane Library, Wonder Wednesdays at Medical Lake Library, and STEAM-Themed Thursdays at Spokane Valley Library.

Early Learners & Their Caregivers

Young children and their caregivers can enjoy stories and activities to build early literacy skills at our weekly Play & Learn Storytime programs. Parents, caregivers, and anyone interested in early childhood literacy can watch Picture Book Chat to learn about the best new books to read with early learners. They can also sign up for STARS Training: Movement & Early Learning to discover how movement stimulates brain development in young children.
