Online Summer Reading Challenge offers rewards, prize drawings for tracking reading

Spokane, WA | June 4, 2026Spokane County Library District (SCLD) announces the Online Summer Reading Challenge: Unearth a Story, taking place June 1–August 31. This challenge is for everyone of every age and encourages people in Spokane County to read and listen to books. By tracking reading minutes, participants can help SCLD reach the community reading goal of 1 million minutes!

Unearth a Story is a dinosaur-themed challenge inviting readers of all ages to explore new worlds and uncover hidden gems. The challenge has four age groups: early learners (ages 0–4), kids (ages 5–12), teens (ages 13–17), and adults (18+).

As readers track their reading, they earn digital badges toward rewards and prize drawings. There are also activities to complete all summer long for additional digital badges.

Readers earn a digital badge for every 60 minutes of reading with completion of the challenge at 600 minutes. Readers have until August 31 to complete the challenge to be automatically entered into the grand prize drawing for their age group. Kids also receive a Certificate of Achievement.

There are other rewards for registration and reading milestones. Every child and teen, ages 0–17, who registers can visit an SCLD library to choose a new book to keep forever, while supplies last.

When reaching 240 minutes (4 hours) of reading, youth ages 5–17 can claim a coupon for one free soccer ticket with the purchase of a ticket to a Spokane Velocity FC match. When reaching 450 minutes (7.5 hours) of reading, youth ages 0–17 can get one free admission to the Spokane County Interstate Fair, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary.

Each age group’s grand prize drawing features its own prize(s). Prizes include a package of grippy socks, T-shirts, and two passes to We Play, a gift certificate for a birthday party at Brick Buy Brick, Spokane Indians Baseball box seats, Spokane Chiefs Hockey Red Zone seats, and more.

The Summer Reading book giveaway is generously sponsored by the Library Foundation of Spokane County and community members who donated to Library Giving Day. Other rewards and prizes have been generously donated by each local business and organization.
