Library Giving Day donations support the joy and skills of reading for children and teens

Spokane, WA | March 26, 2024 To boost the Spokane County Library District’s Summer Reading program, the Library Foundation of Spokane County is fundraising on Library Giving Day to give books to kids and teens to kick off summer reading. All proceeds from the campaign will go to the purchase of books, and donations of any size are appreciated.

Library Giving Day takes place on Wednesday, April 3, and the fundraising goal is $5,000. This goal will help raise enough funds so that each youth who registers for summer reading can choose a book from a selection of new books that they can keep for their very own.

“Research shows that choosing their own reading material is a better reading motivator for kids than any prize,” shares Gwendolyn Haley, Public Services Manager at Spokane County Library District (SCLD).

It is not surprising that choice is the single best reading motivator for kids. Also, kids who read during the summer beat the summer slide, which happens when kids don’t read over the summer and lose reading skills. The Summer Reading program at SCLD encourages kids to maintain or improve their reading skills, helping to ensure that they are ready to learn when returning to school in the fall.

During 2023, over 900 children registered for summer reading. SCLD is expecting the same interest, or more, for summer reading in 2024.

This Library Giving Day, you can give the gift of reading to children. There’s no need to wait to donate. The Library Foundation is accepting donations now and continuing through April 30 at www.supportscld.org/library-giving-day.

Jill-Lynn Nunemaker, Development Manager, shared that “the Foundation accepts donations from individuals, businesses, and organizations to help promote literacy and give every single child and teen a summer reading book that they get to read, keep, and cherish.” Learn more about the Library Foundation of Spokane County and its mission at www.supportscld.org.
