Spokane is Reading is proud to announce that this year’s community-wide read is Debra Magpie Earling’s novel Perma Red, recently named by The Atlantic Monthly as one of “The Great American Novels.” The novel’s themes include the traditions of the Bitterroot Salish, the challenges of reservation life, the disappearances of Indigenous women, and the motif of ghosts found throughout the novel.
At this event, Earling will read from a section of her work and then take questions from the audience about the novel’s themes, the author’s creative process, and anything else readers are wondering about Earling’s writing. Each event is free and open to the public. Copies of Perma Red will be available for purchase from Auntie’s Bookstore at each event, and the author will be signing her work.
