Event Description:

Americans spend approximately 87% of their time indoors. An additional 6% of our time is spent in a vehicle. That leaves a mere 7% of our time spent outside. A little less than 12 hours per week on average. No wonder the time that we do spend outside is so important to us and so powerful in its impacts. Whether it’s positive outcomes for mental health, stress levels, cardiovascular health or many other areas, spending time outside is impactful for recreationists.

The wide-ranging industry known as Outdoor Recreation accounted for $374 billion in economic activity in 2016 and growing. Everything from fish-hooks to ATVs to campground fees. This figure is around 2% of gross-domestic product. A 2015 report from the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office attributes $20.5 Billion of the state’s economy to outdoor rec.

Come and hear a little bit about the importance of outdoor recreation for both the individuals that go outside and for the economies that surround them from our guest speaker for the July Business Connections program, Dave Gilbert, Assistant Director for Outdoor Programs, Gonzaga University. And then let’s talk a bit about how to get involved.

About the speaker:

Dave Gilbert grew up in Southwest Washington and Western Oregon and has called Spokane home for the last 18 years, since arriving in the fall of 2000 to attend Gonzaga University.
In addition to a Marketing degree and an MBA with a focus on Finance from GU, Dave has many technical certifications in the outdoor industry. In 2009 he was lucky enough reach the summit of North America on 20,320’ Denali, though these days his expeditions are more likely involve a river and include his two young sons and his wife, Lindsay.
His work in the outdoors always centers around a deep sense of respect and awe that he feels for the outdoors that he wishes to share.
